gunpowder

A single shot marks the beginning of an unforgettable summer.

When twenty-one-year-old Blair Kennedy is shot in the leg by a rival gang, he lands in the care of Mount Sinai hospital and a med student who is arguably the least hospitable man he's ever met. Blair is all too happy when they part ways, but life seems determined for their paths to keep crossing.

Wren is cold and sarcastic with a past wreathed in secrecy, the polarizing opposite to Blair's passionate loyalty and quick temper. They're incompatible in every sense of the word and yet Blair finds himself burning to know what hides behind the beautiful but frigid exterior of Wren Masters.

All the while, Blair's arms-dealing gang Incindious, led by convicted arsonist Felix Bane, is at vicious war with the clandestine group known as Phantom.

The one rule for survival?
Trust no one.
Gunpowder is a medium burn romance between gang member Blair Kennedy and aloof med student Wren Masters. Themes and tropes include grumpy/sunshine, opposites attract, telling each other to shut up as a love language, loss of virginity, emotional healing, and moderate angst.

(𝐈𝐧 𝐚 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐲) At thirty-three years old, acclaimed tattoo artist Jasper Hayes has had his heart broken enough, thanks very much. He’s done with relationships. He has his job and his dogs, and that’s all he needs. It doesn’t matter if some gorgeous, smooth-talking man comes into the shop and starts courting him like modern day Mister fucking Darcy. The pretty rich guy can go find his Elizabeth somewhere else. Forty-six-year-old Konrad Iversen isn’t looking for love either when he walks into Blackwing Tattoo, but from the moment he sees Jasper, he knows that’s his person. Jasper has a guarded heart, but Konrad has known his fair share of heartbreak as well, and he’s nothing if not patient. He’ll win over that beautiful, feral artist, one way or another.

Epidermis Please note that this book is intended only for readers over the age of 18. Epidermis is single third person POV. There is a thirteen-year age gap between the main characters and they are verse. There is an excessive use of pet names (darling, sweetheart, etc.). I know these things are not everyone’s cup of tea, so I try to provide as much information as possible to help decide if this is the right story for you.

This book deals with themes of inadequacy, abandonment issues, anxiety, stimulation/sensory processing issues, and having neurodivergence treated like something to be ashamed of (previous, referenced). It also addresses the loss of a family member to terminal illness, medically assisted suicide, and grief.

The protagonist is an autistic queer man written by an autistic queer man, but I do not claim to represent the perspective of all neurodivergent people, and I welcome feedback from my ND readers if you feel this representation was mishandled in any way.
